Chelsea Matson, LCMHC
Chelsea is a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor at Matone Counseling & Testing. She is a long time Charlotte resident, earning her BA in Sociology and BS in Psychology from UNCC. She earned her Master’s and Specialist degrees in Mental Health Counseling from the University of Florida. Chelsea is also a Certified IFS Therapist and has completed Level 1 and 2 trainings from the IFS Institute.
Chelsea works primarily with adults on a range of presenting issues. Some of these include depression, anxiety disorders, relationship stress, identity exploration, existential and meaning-making issues, grief, and adjustment to life transitions. Chelsea views most presenting issues through a systemic lens that considers the societal and environmental contexts in which symptoms occur. She is passionate about social justice and believes socio-economic systems are often significant contributors to mental health distress.
Chelsea’s therapeutic style is one that allows for a balance of flexibility and structure in her approach. Chelsea primarily uses Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy with clients. Chelsea values IFS for its tenets of being non-pathologizing, strengths-based, and embracing of the complexities of each person’s identity and life story. Chelsea integrates person-centered and existential theories with IFS. She also incorporates mindfulness and experiential techniques in her work with clients, using the power of the present moment to deepen self awareness and create change. Chelsea believes that effective, transformative therapy is possible when the counseling relationship creates opportunities for authenticity, vulnerability, and courage to embrace the discomfort that accompanies healing and change. Chelsea truly believes in each client’s innate capacity for clarity and growth, and she views it as a top priority to help client’s access their power to creatively author their own lives. She considers it a privilege to be a supportive presence along each client’s journey.
