Daniel Stillwell (he/him) is the Clinical Director and a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) at the South Asheville branch of Matone Counseling. He has an LMFT in North Carolina and is a nationally credentialed (AAMFT) MFT supervisor. After receiving his masters in MFT from Louisville Seminary, he went on to earn a PhD in Family Therapy from Saint Louis University. He has practiced on and off since 2008, spending several years also as a professor of MFT for different universities. His passions for client care and organizational leadership are a great match for Matone Counseling and he has been delighted to be a part of the team since 2019.

Daniel’s clinical expertise is firmly rooted in relational work. His client load is primarily couples, but also sees individuals, adult families, and late adolescents. Even when seeing individual clients, Daniel has a keen eye for how the interactions and dynamics between people are brought into those sessions as well. He believes that change is more pervasive and lasts longer when the change is integrated into the relationships clients hold dear. He has found particular effectiveness with high-achieving people and people who access their spiritual (not just Christian) side. He works with clients to empower them to be able to empower themselves and those in their lives.

A vital part of Dr. Stillwell’s practice is his commitment to the LGBTQ+ community. He has extensive training and experience with the different dimensions and issues associated with gender and sexual diversity. He compassionately comes alongside people in their relationship restructuring, coming out processes, or even in more “standard” relational issues. Know that Daniel is not going to be judging or unduly elevating the queer dimensions beyond their scope. This also means he is especially fluent and practiced at working with the poly/non-monogamous and kink communities, regardless of structure or lack of hierarchy. These polycules (whatever the shape) are prime for relational therapy, even if it is simply wanting to move from getting by to thriving. Everyone deserves a chance to have someone empower them to create the changes they want for themselves and their loved ones.

In addition to his work as a therapist and coach, Daniel also provides supervision and consultation for other professionals. If you are in the process of seeking your LMFT or LCMHC and would like individual or group supervision, Daniel would love to connect to see if the fit is appropriate for supervisory work. He has considerable supervision experience for early career professionals, and can even align supervision paradigms to model your theory of choice. The language for his own clinical model is “postmodern experiential cybernetics.”

Lastly, as one of the clinical directors at Matone, Daniel is part of a leadership team devoted to the company’s core values of accessibility, compassion, diversity, and integrity.  We believe that every part of the human experience matters and want to cultivate a company that empowers people to heal and grow in the clinical ways they need.
